Manley African American Film Festival on tour Benefiting Tech Exchange(Oakland, CA) -- Oakland-based Tech Exchange (formerly OTXWest), a 501c3 non-profit, has been pivotal in closing the digital divide, and providing underserved schools, families and communities with essential tech tools, multi-lingual tech support and digital literacy skills for over 29 years. Tech Exchange has done this by collecting, refurbishing, and distributing thousands of computers throughout the Bay Area.
Today we are proud to announce a unique film festival fundraiser, partnering with the Black Hollywood Education and Resource (BHERC) based in Los Angeles, CA. BHERC will bring some of their outstanding and award-winning film shorts, by several Bay Area filmmakers to Oakland, including a rarely seen student short film by Oakland’s own Ryan Coogler. This ‘fun’ film fest fundraiser is to help us continue our work as a premiere organization that promotes digital inclusion and digital equity in communities that need it most. The Opening Celebration will be held on July 12th, from 6pm - 9pm at Oakstop, 2323 Broadway in Oakland. The event will include speakers, panel discussion and a reception. The Film Festival, featuring 17 films, will screen on July 13th, from 10am - 8pm, at the Regal Theatre located in Jack London Square, 100 Washington Street in Oakland. About BHERC - Founded by Sandra Evers-Manly, from Pittsburg, CA, BHERC is a nonprofit, public benefit organization designed to advocate, educate, research, develop, and preserve the history and future of Black images in film and television. Through film festivals, award ceremonies, book signings, script readings, contests, scholarships, other programs and special events, BHERC recognizes the contributions of Black and other diverse talent in front of and behind the scenes in the entertainment industry as well as provide scholarship and development and training. Wednesday May 15, 2024 1:00PM - 2:30PM Block Community Hub (at Uptown Station in Oakland) | Join Tech Exchange for an exciting conversation on Green Tech and Sustainability, with our Executive Director Ulises Zatarain and special guests Sara Fuentes of SmartWaste, and Peter Mui of Fix It Clinic. We'll discuss topics such as the tech circular economy and how organizations like Tech Exchange are involved, taking a look at the effect of "disposable tech" on our community, and sharing ways in which local businesses and residents can help increase the life cycle of technology through reuse, repair, and refurbishment.
