On June 27th, Lakefest Oakland brought together community members, local organizations, and partners for a day centered on culture, resources, and connection in the heart of Oakland. Tech Exchange was proud to be part of the event with a small but engaged team representing our mission of bridging the digital divide.
A Strong Presence in the Community
Tech Exchange attended Lakefest with four staff members alongside Executive Director Ulises Zatarain. Together, the team set up a community-facing table designed to spark conversation, answer questions, and share information about Tech Exchange’s programs and services.
Throughout the day, staff engaged with attendees about affordable internet options, low-cost computers, digital literacy training, and internship opportunities. The goal was simple: meet people where they are and make technology access more approachable and understandable for everyone.
Raffle for Digital Access
A key highlight of Tech Exchange’s presence was a community raffle designed to increase engagement and give back directly to attendees. Through the raffle, Tech Exchange gave away:
5 laptops
Several monitors
Raffle tickets were distributed at the table throughout the event, creating excitement and encouraging meaningful conversations about digital equity. For many participants, the raffle was not just about winning a device—it was also an introduction to resources that can support school, work, and everyday life.
Leadership on the Panel Stage
In addition to the tabling presence, Executive Director Ulises Zatarain participated in a panel discussion during Lakefest. He shared his personal journey and professional background, reflecting on what led him into the nonprofit sector and his commitment to expanding access to technology and opportunity.
His story highlighted the importance of community-rooted leadership and the role nonprofits like Tech Exchange play in addressing systemic barriers to digital access. The discussion resonated with attendees interested in education, workforce development, and equity-driven community work.
Building Meaningful Connections
Events like Lakefest reinforce the importance of in-person engagement. Beyond sharing resources, the Tech Exchange team was able to listen directly to community needs, answer questions in real time, and build relationships with residents and partners across Oakland.
Whether through a raffle ticket conversation or a panel discussion, the day reflected Tech Exchange’s broader mission: ensuring that everyone has the tools, access, and support needed to thrive in a digital world.
Looking Ahead
Tech Exchange is grateful to have participated in Lakefest Oakland and to have shared space with so many community organizations and residents. We look forward to continuing this momentum by expanding access to affordable technology, strengthening partnerships, and meeting communities where they are.
