Today marks an inspiring milestone for Tech Exchange’s first cohort of the Library Tech Equity Connection Project, a groundbreaking initiative designed to advance digital and wealth equity in Contra Costa County.

Through a unique partnership with the Contra Costa County Library system and funding from the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors' Innovation Fund, the project connects under-resourced youth to paid, hands-on internships at local libraries and community sites. Over the course of 12 weeks, these Serve2STEM interns worked alongside

Tech Exchange staff, gaining real-world experience while supporting community members on their digital journeys.

Building Skills and Bridging Gaps

The internship offered participants the opportunity to develop essential technical, professional, and leadership skills while making a tangible impact in their communities. At library branches in Walnut Creek, Pittsburg, and San Pablo, interns provided digital navigation and tech support to patrons, helped connect residents to affordable internet programs, and contributed to digital inclusion projects such as video tutorials and train-the-trainer workshops.

Each intern’s journey culminated in a capstone presentation, where they reflected on their experiences, identified challenges faced during their placements, and proposed innovative solutions—ranging from physical space improvements to new technology-based tools that could enhance library operations and community engagement.

The capstone event brought together community leaders and partners who have supported this initiative from its inception. Attending guests included:

  • Julie DiMaggio Enea, Senior Deputy County Administrator, Contra Costa County Administrator’s Office

  • Amy Brunson, Deputy County Librarian, Contra Costa County Library

Their presence underscored the collective effort behind this project and the shared commitment to empowering the next generation of tech leaders.

Looking Ahead

As the first Serve2STEM cohort wraps up, each intern will take home more than just valuable experience—they’ll also receive a free laptop to continue their educational and professional growth.

The success of this pilot cohort highlights the transformative power of collaboration between public institutions and community-based organizations. Together, Tech Exchange and the Contra Costa County Library system are not only bridging the digital divide but also building pathways to career opportunity, confidence, and community impact.
